Goal of Festival: TO BRING THE TOWN TOGETHER

Co-chairs of this committee were determined to be: Betty West and Beverly Davis

Tentative festival date: Saturday, August 21, 2004

It was decided that since August 22, 1984 was the date of town incorporation to schedule the festival for Saturday, August 21, 2004 – 20th year anniversary. Mr. Linville was asked to reserve the Walkertown Park on Darrow Road for that date. If not that date, then the next week ahead or behind. If we can’t use park for some reason, can we use football stadium? Or close Main Street down by blocking it off? Or use open land somewhere? Or see about Highway 66 and Darrow Road?

Ruth Church volunteered to be in charge of getting the food organized. Among the discussion was what food should be served which ranged from hot dogs, chips and drink to hot dogs, beans, and drink. If we can get the food donated, that would be a huge relief in cost. Food Lion and Lowe’s Foods were submitted as stores to seek donations from. It was talked about that having churches sponsor dessert booths would be helpful. Tea and lemonade would be good and cheap drinks to serve.

Organizations and clubs should be invited to participate and/or donate. These would include: churches, civic club, fire department, Little League, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and the schools.

Games that could be played would be volleyball, softball, horse shoes, tennis, and soccer. We could get the churches and organizations to set up teams to compete against each other. How about having an "old-timers" softball team, or several of them to play against each other? Maybe Bingo for the older folks?

Craft booths would be a welcome addition but not yard sale items – only handmade objects for sale. Jimmy Flythe of Duke Power would like to set up a booth.

A suggestion was made to have blood pressure checks, which would be very beneficial, and to have cholesterol screening – which was immediately ruled out due to blood issues.

To get the message out, we could use bulk mailing and leaflets as well as word of mouth. The school’s communication day is Wednesday, which a flyer could be sent home with each child. Publicizing ahead of time through the Kernersville News and the Winston-Salem Journal would be very advantageous. Having news and media coverage in advance as well as the day of would be a good idea.

Another factor to consider would be when other surrounding towns would be having a festival. Stokesdale and Kernersville both have festivals and are situated fairly close to Walkertown, which would affect our festival day.

Other issues included having bands, gospel singers, and face painting. Having a shelter and/or tent were discussed due to the heat of the summer. Maybe get Congressman Richard Burr to come?

It was decided to meet again at Town Hall on Monday, March 15, 2004 at 4:30 p.m.

The meeting ended at 5:30 p.m.

Respectfully submitted by:
